Sashiko Basics
Slow down with hand-stitching
Sashiko is a Japanese mending and embroidery practice. With a simple running stitch, Sashiko’s bold and geometric patterns decorate and strengthen textiles, garments and home goods.
With focus on exploration of the craft, workshop participants will learn how to prepare a thread skein, layout a simple grid, draw patterns, and employ "small stabs" to stitch designs onto their sampler squares.
Choose from a variety of traditional patterns inspired by nature, culture, and architecture. Sashiko patterns may include; tiny plus sign, star stitch, woven tortoise, rice stitch, ocean waves, wild grasses, and linked treasures.
The stitched squares can be used as a patch, a pocket, a framed textile, a tiny bag, or a coaster. All skill levels welcome whether a novice or veteran stitcher!
Please bring your good reading glasses!
All tools & materials provided.
Each class kit will include a pair of Olympus brand Sashiko needles, a tapestry needle threader, one skein of Sashiko thread, fabric sampler squares, resources list, and take home pattern instructions.
